Success Story: Brad Newcomb
Brad Newcomb, Tesla Electric (NABCEP Certified Solar PV Installer™)
Brad is the first in our series of ImagineSolar success stories. Brad first met Michael Kuhn when Michael was teaching at Austin Community College (ACC). Brad did his basic solar training there and then went on to incorporate solar PV installation services into the business he founded, Tesla Electric, about four years ago. Brad returned to seek additional training from Michael and took PV320 in order to prepare for the September 11, 2010 NABCEP Certified PV Installer Exam. Brad passed and is now a Certified NABCEP Solar PV Installer. Brad has been a Master Electrician for 13 years and sees a very bright future in solar PV. He says that it is not an easy field to break into, but well worth it due to the huge growth potential in Texas.
Brad is an electrical contractor (NECA member) and started Tesla Electric in 2002. Among Brad’s solar PV projects to date is one that he designed and installed for the Pedernales Electrical Cooperative; you can see a video of that project (called “Brad and Dad”) here: http://www.coolaustinjobs.com/videosRenew.html. Brad has also done an off-grid system and his company is listed as an approved installer for the City of Austin’s solar PV rebate program.
Brad encourages other NECA contractors to pursue training in solar PV installation. “You already know how to do it,” he tells them. Brad believes that the major obstacle to electricians taking on solar work is the fear surrounding working with DC voltage. Once they get over that, “It’s not rocket science,” said Brad, “now that I am certified, there are a lot more opportunities for my company.” Brad, we look forward to seeing more of your great solar work in and around Austin in the years to come.
